Wesleyan will be celebrating Homecoming this weekend (Nov. 6-8) and we would love to see you back at the house. We will be hosting many events all throughout Saturday to reunite with our alumni. Sidney Espinosa ’94, Alumni Candidate for Wesleyan Board of Trustees – Voting Ends May 25th

“ As a philanthropic investor in (and professional evaluator of) world-class colleges and universities around the world, I am intimately familiar with what makes a great university. I recognize that preserving Wesleyan’s unique strengths requires ensuring academic rigor, economic health, transparency and accountability, faculty retention and support, and vibrant student life. I have a wealth of experience in these areas, having worked with many of the most innovative and creative higher-education institutions across the globe. And I volunteer for this board now because I want to help ensure that the Wesleyan experience remains life-shaping, eye-opening, affordable, and inspirational. Frankly, I love Wesleyan for its unique culture—a culture that I will work to keep healthy and strong.”

Sid Espinosa ’94 is the director of philanthropy programs for Hewlett-Packard, overseeing philanthropic investments in environmental organizations, economic development nonprofits, and schools and universities around the world. Previously, Mr. Espinosa worked at the U.S. Department of Justice for Attorney General Janet Reno and in the Clinton White House. He holds a public policy degree from Harvard University. Mr. Espinosa serves on numerous community and business boards, and has chaired fundraising campaigns for nonprofit and educational organizations. He also has been actively involved in Wesleyan alumni activities, including admission interviews, phonathons, and local alumni events. While at Wesleyan, he served as a resident advisor, an Ebony Singer, a MeChA co-chair, and a senior interviewer. Last November, Mr. Espinosa became the first Latino ever elected to the City Council of Palo Alto, California.

Snaps: Brother Mike Moody ’10 Sets Wesleyan Javelin Record

Brother Michael Moody, Class of 2010, contiued his record-shattering tendencies this weekend, as he broke Wesleyan’s Javelin record with a toss of 203 feet 7 inches. In doing so, Moody past himself on the record board, where he set the record mark at 188 feet 2 inches in 2008. Moody was Wesleyan’s top scorer (18 points) at the annual Little Three meet, placing secong in the hammer throw, third in the discus, and fifth in shot-put.

Main Floor Chandelier Refurbished!

Over spring break, two important capital improvement projects were completed at the Xi. First, extensive re-wiring was conducted throughout many of the house’s important circuits to bring very old wires up to modern safety standards. Second, all of the main floors chandeliers enjoyed a thorough refurbishing. Now symmetrical, uniform, and shiny, the Psi U’s chandeliers bring back some of the classic luster that has recently been absent at the Xi.

Semi-Annual Public Service Dinner Held

Each semester the brothers invite the servicemen and women of Middletown and Portland down to the Xi to share warm a meal and friendly company. On February 5th, approximately 30 firemen, police officers, emergency responders, town officials, and politicians gathered with around 40 brothers in the main hall. Archon Scott James eloquently conveyed our gratitude for the selfless service of these officials, and lively discussion occurred over hearty plates of stuffed chicken breast, eggplant parmesan, rice, beans, chowder, etc.

Psi U and WesAID raise over $1100 for “Drop in the Bucket”

Student group, WesAID, held a concert at the Xi to raise money for Drop in the Bucket, a charity that builds wells in Africa to provide people with clean sources of drinking water. The show features many talented acts, including The Shade, Fashion People, and Rafter. The crowd steadily gathered and culminated in a tremendous performance by Buru Style featuring Lady Lee, which had a packed venue grooving to feel good reggae music.

Charity Concert Raises $800

On Friday, January 23rd, Psi Upsilon collaborated with Wesleyan student Michael Rosen ’11 in organizing a charity concert. Featuring campus DJ duo Chrome Punch and the rap ground Notherground Music (featuring DJ Kraft, 6th Sense, Wildabeast, and Jelani) the show raised over $800 for building schools in Tanzania. The show was the first of several charity concerts planned this semester, and was successful in bringing Wesleyan students together safely to enjoy a party.
